Solos: The String Contingent

Sat 9th April 7:30pm (Doors open at 7pm)
Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank Belconnen

Griffyn Ensemble members Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) will be joined by Scotsman Graham McLeod (guitar) to showcase their work as the renowned new-acoustic chamber-folk trio The String Contingent. Over the past six years, The String Contingent have established themselves in ‘the upper echelon of instrumental exploration, arrangement, composition and performance’ (Tony Hillier, Rhythms). Their music ‘brings to mind the bluegrass records of Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer…with elements of Bach, Kronos Quartet and sometimes a splash of Philip Glass…they are incredibly skilled…’ (Ulf Torstensson, Lira).

This special Canberra performance will feature new compositions by the trio that will be recorded the following week at Four Winds, the renowned music haven near Bermagui, NSW. This will result in the trio’s fifth full length album which has been developed through a two-part artistic residency at Four Winds, designed to pull back the curtains on creative process. You can share in their journey through online documentation of the project which features music inspired by and improvised in the acoustically designed Windsong Pavillion.

The String Contingent’s live performances are a joyful combination of precision, refinement and beauty, balanced with visceral energy and drive. They share the stories of their music with an engaging and honest enthusiasm, allowing audiences to enter a rich musical world and take a journey to somewhere new and yet familiar.

This is a Griffyn Solos performance, kindly supported by Belconnen Arts Centre.  This performance is included in a Gold Membership.
