One of the thrills of being in a chamber group like Griffyn is meeting other musicians around the world who have done similar things. Sometimes this is in person, sometimes this is more virtual, and sometimes it is simply a historical ‘discovery’.
In 2013, we discovered a flute-soprano-harp American trio from the 1980s ‘The Jubal Trio’. The Jubal Trio commissioned a stack of works for the combination – and of course, we felt obliged to resurrect such works.
One of the works was by American composer Ursula Mamlok entitled ‘Der Andreasgarten’, with text bu her husband Dwight Mamlok. Each movement contained a scene from a garden on the San Andreas fault in California (which happens to be on the opposite latitudinal line to Canberra). Visual artist Annika Romeyn beautifully interpreted these movements as illustrations, (see above for a sample), in our Earth performance and tour in 2013.
