Behind Bars

The Griffyn Ensemble tells a story of the deepest humanity and celebration of Art in the most trying circumstances with Behind Bars: music written and performed in prisons and concentration camps across the world in the 20th century.

Transport yourself through the power of music as the Griffyn Ensemble guide you through the Greek military junta of 1967 with the inspirational March of the Spirit by Greek Cultural Hero and composer Zorba Mikis Theodorakis. Experience re-enactments of artsong and opera composed for children at Theresienstadt Concentration Camp by Czech composers Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein and Hans Krasa during WWII. Hear the tragic story of Theresienstadt to the soundtrack of Olivier Messiaen’s iconic Quartet for the End of Time, and take yourself to San Quentin prison in America through the songs of Johnny Cash and music of Henry Cowell who was imprisoned for bisexual behaviour.
